SnoBusters 2007 Newsletter

Hello Snobusters - Let’s get ready!!

It’s the time of year again ... the leaves are starting to change here in Woodford, the nights are getting cooler, and before you know it the snow will be flying. But we still have a lot of work to do to get our trails ready. There’s trimming of branches, bridges to be repaired and brushing to get done so our Vast trail system will be ready to open on December 16. Trail work starts on Saturday September 29 at 8am and every Saturday until the trails open on December 16. We need lots of help and are always looking for volunteers. If you are interested in joining us for a Saturday in the woods and to meet some of the other volunteers, please contact John Dovitski at 860-584-5963 or vtsnoman@sbcglobal.net with a date. Please bring a lunch for your self. There are also two Trailworker Breakfasts scheduled – Saturday, October 6 and Saturday, November 3 at 7am at the Maintenance Facility. They will be hosted by Betty & Norm Roark and then by Joe & Lisa Michaud. Everyone is welcome to participate.

Some WSB History

The Woodford Snobusters snowmobile club started in September, 1984 on the front porch of the McKenna's homestead in Woodford by a group of friends.  I believe the group were President Joy Mckenna, Secretary Peter Daigle, Treasure Doris Lemieoux, Vice President John Fiori, and Trailmaster Jack McKenna. The group also served as board members. They knew they had a great spot to share good times and great fun with family and friend's. They Directors of Clubstarted grooming with snowmobiles with pipe drags.

They all pitched in and bought their first Groomer and drag. That first Groomer was what they called a Bombi - a small little track machine. They used that for a year or two. Then they bought the first LMC in 1987 and the 2nd one in 1988.  In 1993 they traded one of the LMC's in for a Tucker Snocat.

A couple of years later they traded the other LMC for the first Piston Bully and then the Tucker for the next Piston Bully. As time went by we got two more Piston Bully's to keep our trail system groomed well above all others.

Maintenance ShedThe club’s rapid growth is the result of the elevation of 2300 ft and the amount of snow we get that our neighboring towns do not get. Our location being in Southern Vermont on the western side of the state, we get a lot of lake affect snow, so at times it is raining at the bottom of the mountain and snowing in Woodford. Being in southern Vermont, it is a close drive from CT, MA, NH, and NY.  Plus, being in the middle of the Green Mountain National Forest, you have great views and lots of wildlife.

The main reason for WSB's success is all the volunteers - past and present - that spent their time helping this club grow during the last 22 years. THANKS!  Now the club has a new maintenance facility.  Thanks to the Cofiell's and Roark's for donating the land for the building - it is almost 100% complete. It will be a nice place to work on all our equipment.

Trail & Equipment Update

So far this year, Scott and his crew have been very busy working on the Groomers. All the fluids have been changed, greased, and cleaned up. We still have more to do but we’re off to a great start. The drags need some repair also. They will start on that soon. We are very lucky to have such talented Volunteers ... I don’t think that there is a problem they can’t fix. The Snobusters Groomer operators did a great job last season for the amount of snow we had. Most clubs didn’t even groom because they didn’t have enough snow. To Scott and his crew - AWESOME JOB - Thanks!

Private Landowners & Acknowledgement

The Snobusters would also like to thank the Green Mountain National Forest and the private landowners for letting us use their land for our trails. We would not be able to enjoy the trails if it weren’t for good people like you. THANKS AGAIN!

Special People Ride

Last year’s Special People Ride was another great time for everyone.  It snowed all day!  We had about 60 people and the State Police were they’re helping us too.  We had folks bring their sleds with trailers to give people rides.  They all took turns giving rides and taking rides.  Vermont Magazine was there too.  They heard about what we do for these special people and they’re doing a story about it.  It should be in the January issue, so watch for it.

Hot Dog Roast

The Hot Dog Roast was a great day also.  We had a great turnout.  It was a nice sunny day and Kim and Bill from National Forest stopped by, as did Alexis and Josh from VAST.   They came down to ride our trails - it was nice to see them again.  Mike Ryiz and Norm Roark did a great job with help from lots of people - great job everyone!

Building Update

Our building is almost 100% complete. Norm and his crew did a terrific job - it is a nice place to work on the equipment. The Snobusters would like to say thank you to all the people who made this building possible.

GMNF and Private Landowners Acknowledgement

The Snobusters would also like to thank the Green Mountain National Forest and the private landowners for letting us use their land for our trails. We would not be able to enjoy the trails if it weren’t for good people like you.  THANKS AGAIN!

Memberships

No club would survive without its members – from the juniors all the way up to Grandma & Grandpa. With the rising costs of fuel, maintaining equipment, taxes, insurance, and all the other things, we would like to say thanks you to all - past and present. it’s the people that give this Club the ability to have one of the best-maintained trail systems in the Northeast. Don’t forget your helmets or insurance - it is mandatory in VT.
